Program Details - How Does It Work?
First, let's tackle the question of what Amazon Turk is. Amazon Turk, better known by its full name of Amazon Mechanical Turk or MTurk, is a program by Amazon Web Services that lets users complete tasks that humans do better than machines like coordinating colors to photographs or transcribing text and be paid for it.
In other words, Amazon Turk co-ordinates the use of human intelligence to perform tasks which computers are unable to do. The people that put up tasks you can take on are known as 'Requesters'. After the task is completed, the Requester can either accept or reject your work, and decline to pay you if they are not satisfied. Payments for completing tasks are made by Amazon, on behalf of the Requester, to you by Amazon gift certificate, which can also be transferred to a US bank account. Amazon, in turn, makes a percentage of every completed task's 'Reward'.
Is It Worth The Effort?
Now, on to the bigger question: Is it worth the effort? Like everything else, that depends on what the task. Our advice is to never take on a task that makes you question whether it is worth the 'Reward'. In such cases, almost always you will end up spending more time than you originally anticipated and it will not be worth the effort, or if you rush, could be rejected by the Requester.
The Pitfalls
What is increasingly happening on Amazon Turk is individuals are posting tasks that are paying ridiculously low amounts, simply in the hopes that someone will jump on the task. Don't take on tasks that you deem are paying too low, this only encourages such Requesters knowing they can find someone to ocmplete their task at a ridiculously low rate.
Requesters also do not have to file tax forms, and can avoid regulations like minimum wage, overtime, and workers compensation laws. You also have no recourse if the Requester refuses to pay you for good work, because it is all at their discretion. For this reason some have even criticized Amazon Mechanical Turk for being nothing more than a "virtual sweatshop."
Conculsion
Choose reputable Requesters who pay fairly for the work, and in the long run you will be satisified after completing the work and earn more.
